The Fourth Sunday of Easter has been designated “World Day of Prayer for Vocations.”
Our baptism manifests an invitation or a calling to follow Jesus in his mission. It is our most basic vocation, the first step in our discipleship. By continually and intentionally following our baptismal vocation we can discover other vocations from God that are more personal to us like a specific lifestyle such as the priesthood, married life, or religious life. Within these broad vocations there are more personal callings that might be sharing a particular or unique gift like praying or writing or singing or repairing, or building. Perhaps it might be an invitation to an adventurous undertaking like a new job or assignment. Such personal vocations will the good the good of the other for the other’s sake, are scripturally sound, are new to us in our phase of life, and often make us uneasy. Yet, if we move into that uneasiness, we may be surprised to discover that vocations are more uniquely suited to us than we give God credit for. Why would vocations be otherwise?
Pray for vocations, especially baptismal vocations upon which all other vocations rest. Follow your vocation.
